The Bachelor of Music Education program offered at the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses is designed to meet teacher certification requirements set by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Completion of the music education degree prepares students to teach both vocal and instrumental music at the pre-K through high school levels. Students have opportunities to observe, participate, and teach in school settings prior to student teaching to give them more experience in the classroom while at CU.  The degree concludes with a term of student teaching that includes a professional seminar focusing on resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, and certification procedures.

The program attempts to provide a balance between a broad general education, the intensive training necessary to develop a professional musician, and the background of professional study and experience necessary for entering the field of education in today's society.  Students have the opportunity to gain teaching experience in both the elementary and secondary music classroom during their course of study, in lab settings, and in student teaching.

Students select to be tracked in either the vocal or instrumental area, thereby meeting the needs of the public school systems in their demand for specialization.  Voice students are typically placed in the vocal track, while students studying band and orchestra instruments are typically placed in the instrumental track.  Piano and guitar students can choose between the two tracks.  Exceptions to these assignments may be petitioned to music education faculty no later than the sophomore year.  Pennsylvania certifies music teachers to teach Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade music (all areas), so this degree program provides for a broad base of instruction for all students with ample choral, instrumental, and general music exposure and experiences.

The Bachelor of Music in Performance is available in piano, guitar, voice, percussion, and any standard string, brass, and woodwind instrument.  CU offers this degree at the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses to exceptional musicians who are committed to pursuing high achievement in ensemble and solo performance.  The vocal and instrumental tracks are nearly identical, with area-specific coursework in the areas of advanced conducting, music literature, and pedagogy.

The Bachelor of Music in Performance curriculum prepares young musicians for graduate study in music.  For some, this degree may also be used as an opportunity to focus on performance skills in preparation for careers, or further study, in fields outside of music.

The Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Music Technology combines professional studies in music with coursework in general music technology, recording, studio production techniques, live sound reinforcement, and a 3-credit (120 hours) internship in a music technology area in the student’s area of interest. Additional coursework is drawn from the Computer Science, Graphic Design, and Media programs in order to develop the student’s basic understanding of mass media and relevant computer technologies.  The 24-credit music technology component gives students an overview of technology, recording, and studio technique principles.  The internship is normally done during the final semester, or summer, after all other music technology course work has been completed.

The Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business combines professional studies in music with a 12-credit music industry concentration and an 18-credit business minor.  A variety of business minors to choose from gives individual students the opportunity to approach business studies from a breath-of-knowledge perspective or narrow their focus in or more specific business areas.  The 3- to 12-credit internship can be accomplished full- or part-time during fall, spring, or summer sessions.
